What is weaning? At some point, milk alone won’t be enough to satisfy your baby's developing nutritional needs. That’s when it’s time to start weaning your baby, beginning to introduce a variety of the foods which will provide them with a balanced diet from breakfast through to dessert. Begin with gentle tastes and smooth textures, and if you need a hand with any aspect of weaning, our team is always happy to help.Weaning is essential for developmentWeaning is quite simply the process of moving your baby from a total milk diet to one that includes solid food too. Milk will continue to supply many of the nutrients your baby needs for some time, but as your baby becomes more active, solid foods will become an increasingly important part of their healthy, balanced diet. It’s an exciting part of your baby’s development and an essential one. They’ll need the different nutrients in food for healthy growth – both mentally and physically. Developing and learningWeaning isn't just about filling them up. Around this stage, your baby is extremely adaptable and learns fast. Introducing them to lots of new tastes means they’ll enjoy a greater variety of foods later on, which will help you to give them a balanced diet. Be patientBear in mind that weaning is a bit of a trial and error process and because learning to eat is such a big change from sucking milk from breast or bottle, it can get a bit frustrating for your baby – and for you too! The importance of a balanced dietNo single food can provide all the nutrition your baby needs, so it's crucial they learn to love a wide variety of different foods. Introducing different types of food will give them the balance of protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals they need to grow and develop. The foods they eat from breakfast through to desserts all play a different role in giving your baby the variety of food and nutrients they need.
