How do I store baby milk?

There have been some changes regarding the best way to store manufactured baby milk. It’s important to stick to guidelines so that your baby stays safe and healthy, so make sure you’re up to date with the latest advice. If you’re worried about making up bottles correctly, just give us a call.

What’s new?

Some things, like always sticking to good hygiene practices and following manufacturer’s guidelines when preparing your baby’s food, remain the same. But the Department of Health and Food Standards Agency have recently issued new advice about how to prepare baby milk:

  • Boil freshly-run water. Leave the kettle to cool for no longer than 30 minutes before mixing it with the milk powder. Don't use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water as the mineral levels might be too high.
  • Prepare baby milk fresh for each feed, as storing milk could increase the chances of your baby becoming ill.
  • Throw away any left-over milk after 2 hours.
  • Always test the temperature of the feed and, if needed, cool the feed down by holding the bottle – with the teat covered – under cold running water.

To make a feed for use later, keep the freshly boiled water in a sealed container. Make up a fresh feed when required and feed immediately.
